AREA ATTRACTIONS

Situated at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile Rivers, amidst a tropical terrain of rain forests, mountains, waterfalls and deserts, Khartoum has intrigued explorers since the days of Dr Livingstone. An ebullient, ever-growing, modern city with an increasing number of glass tower blocks altering its skyline, Khartoum is fast becoming a bustling metropolis. Western-style nightlife is strictly limited in Khartoum, but the city has a growing collection of open-air cafes and eateries and the opening hours at more upmarket restaurants and hotels are usually flexible.

The National Museum of Sudan, which includes glassware, pottery, statuary and figurines from both Sudanese history and pre-history, is the largest in the entire country. T

he Palace Museum boasts a remarkable collection of antique luxury cars, while the main exhibition covers artefacts from both pre and post-Independence days.

Nile cruises, mountaineering, scuba-diving, nomadic excursions and camel-riding abound for the more adventurous traveller while the stunning Pyramids of Meroe are worthy of an excursion.

Khartoum may not have as many souks as the neighbouring city of Omdurman, but the enormous Souq (Souk) Arabi, spread over several squares in the very heart of the city is a must-visit. Top souvenir buys would include ebony wood carvings, gold and silver jewellery, clay coffee pots, Sudanese baskets and speciality food and spices, but be prepared to haggle hard.

Car hire is easily available and the bright yellow taxis, minivans or air-conditioned, metered cabs are plentiful. Three-wheeled taxis – known as bajaj or raksha – can be used for short trips within the three cities of Khartoum.
